A new book by the business journalist William Keegan – 'Saving the World’? Gordon Brown Reconsidered – makes a spirited plea in mitigation.
One unnamed official who worked closely with Mr Brown is quoted as saying:
“The world financial crisis was his finest hour… True, his temper and character were not perfect. But it’s funny how we admired the British determination and controlled fury of Churchill and Mrs Thatcher.”
